The Secret Garden

A rooftop is somehow a private but exposed area. Some people use these spaces for storing miscellaneous old items while others plant; some rooftops are more organized and some are in disarray. Different people use rooftops in different ways; these areas are full of life and are representative of human sentiments. I call them ‘the secret gardens’.

Peep 窺視

The round shapes stand for the scenes observed through a telescope. They are all about the signs of our lives in this tiny city. And our memories in behind…

The Changing Order

In Macao, the historic districts' neighborhoods applied urban planning from the days when Macau was still made up of two-storey buildings. In just a few decades, the two-storey pitch roof buildings were rebuilt into five-storey ones. And the orginally southern-European style houses with balconies were replaced by such buildings, which, from the second floor up, stretch along the street in a same direction- if looked from high above, the streets are like many a narrow crevices. In order to get more living space, the people built extra rooms on the rooftops. The original jumble of illegal rooftop constructions becomes a whole due to their plentiful existence, thus adding a unique texture to the city. The interesting part is that this was not designed by the urban planners or the architects, but rather an improvisation of dwellers.
I have long been observing the order in this constant change brought about by the involvement of a lot of people. It was only in the last decade, under hte huge impact of an external force that the original order started being broken.
